Arturs Laizans
Sometimes surprises are nice, especially good surprises. Surprises not always happen by themselves. It is gratifying to occasionally plan a surprise for each other. So we surprised ourselves with a quick getaway from Barcelona and escaped to Spanish Pyrenees. We ended up being surprised by what we saw and what we learned.

It is fair to expect that by going to the mountains one will see some peaks and valleys, some cliffs, occasional river grinding it's way through the stone. And we were not disappointed. Beautiful views were plentiful.

Stone buildings, in this case old and abandoned, but also often inhabited and looked after, with views on snowy peeks were easy to come by. This one used to be a small farm a century ago at around 1400 meters above sea level. I could imagine one lucky farmer plowing his fields with such views.

In this trip we pushed ourselves a bit with the distances we had to walk and altitudes we had to climb. The curiosity of what we would find around the corner helped us keep going.

I had a misconception that Spain besides its big cities is pretty uninhabited in the rural areas. To our surprise we found many small cities bustling with life. In Pyrenees tourism season does not stop whole year round. In summer people come for hiking, in winter there are slopes open for skiing. There is also a bit of industry and agriculture too as well as Spaniards having holiday homes here.

Catalan Pyrenees are full of little cure towns and villages with stone houses and locals with heats of gold. We met few locals and all of them where very friendly and helpful. A sheep farmer in this town helped us pass through a sheep traffic jam when we found ourselves in a stalemate with a sea of sheep on a narrow mountain road.

It is a bit of a joke that sometimes parking lots have the best views and sunsets. However, there were more parking lots with million dollar views in this trip.

We are always happy to try and enjoy local cuisine. It is one way to learn about a place and it's traditions. In this case it was a beer from village we could almost see from this terrace at 1678 meters. It's name is La Pica, in Latvian Pica means Pizza and in Spanish it means The Peak.

To me it was surprising to see snow in Spain, a country most people associate with warm climate and beaches. It was even more unexpected to see mountain ranges in snow and slopes full of Spaniards skiing and snowboarding.

This was not our first mountain weekend and hopefully not our last one. We got immersed, recharged and fell in-love. Surprise yourselves and world will surprise you back.
